Spirit

The latest issue of Visionaire, entitled "Spirit" is a dedication to the life, times and incredible talent of the late, great Lee Alexander McQueen. A true genius and a true visionaire.

Spirit features such contributors as Mario Testino, Nick Knight, Steven Klein and Queen of Everything Lady Gaga, among others.

Anyone have $295 to spare? I assure you I'm a very good cause.

Life-long Stylists

I need to find a way to persuade Hedi Slimane, Christopher Bailey and/or Rick Owens to dress me for the rest of my life...
I'll look into it and get back to you.

"When you see her... Everything changes.
All of a sudden, it's not gravity holding you to the planet.
It's her... Nothing else matters."
Jacob Black

I'm not crazy about the Twilight saga, but my inner teenage girl did swoon ever so slightly over that line.

Latest Girl Crush: Bryce Dallas Howard... preferably blonde.

Oh, and I've just discovered comedian Tim Minchin - Genius.

Look into it.

"I don't want to be cool, I want to be fashion."

A big thank you to Iñaki over at sovipzone.blogspot.com for introducing me to Anna Dello Russo, the Italian fashion icon, and Editor-at-large and Creative Consultant at VOGUE Nippon.

She works with what she has.

Alfred, Walt & Annie

"A thing that you see in my pictures is that I was not afraid to fall in love with these people. "

For a few years now Annie Leibovitz has been photographing celebrities for Vanity Fair, re-creating and reinventing famous movie scenes and posters (from works by people such as Walt Disney andAlfred Hitchcock) and even did a series of fictional movie stills, based on film noir.

Always beautifully composed (and not to mention, edited) I always look forward Leibovitz's editorials and have yet to be disappointed. In a spontaneous celebration of her work, here are some of my all time favourites.

A visually stunning image of Julianne Moore as Ariel and Michael Phelps aptly posed as a Merman from Disney's The Little Mermaid.

A magical image of Gisele Bundchen as Wendy, Tina Fey as Tinkerbell and Mikhail Baryshnikov as Peter Pan from Disney's adaptation of J.M. Barrie's "Peter Pan".

Bewitching: Keira Knightley as Dorothy and artist Jeff Koons as a flying monkey from the 1939 classic, The Wizard of Oz.

In a fictional film noir shady businessmen Bruce Willis, Ben Affleck and Tobey Maguire try to strike up a deal....

.... as detective Alec Baldwin interrogates screen siren Jennifer Connelly watched closely by police officer Aaron Eckhart....

.... while the ever-elegant Judi Dench and Helen Mirren wait patiently in the getaway car.

The Alfred Hitchcock collection in particular, I adored.

Poised: Jodie Foster as Melanie Daniels, Tippi Hedren's character in Alfred Hitchcock's The Birds (1963).

A captivating and evocative image of Renée Zellweger as Kim Novak's character from 1958's Vertigo.

An approprately cast Scarlett Johansson as Grace Kelly and a brooding Javier Bardem as James Stewart in my personal favourite Hitchcock movie, 1954's Rear Window.

New goal in life - To emulate an iconic move in an editorial photographed by Annie Leibovitz.

Too early unknown and known too late.

"Is love a tender thing? It is too rough,
Too rude, too boist'rous; and it pricks like thorn."

Haven't really had much time to blog the past few weeks, I've felt very uninspired and have been deep in thought for the majority of the summer so far, there's always something for me to think about and things tend to all come at once. But I'm back after a brief sabbatical.

This week, a very close friend of mine was endlessly complaining about her lack of luck when it comes to love. Over coffee and a bagel she seemed defeated, emotionally drained and not her usual optimistic, heavily ambitious self.
Pretty, intelligent and in her mid-twenties she has endlessly blamed herself for her misfortune, particularly her previous relationship which ended.... not so well. I, and other friends have told her time and time again, that it's not her but that she has consistently fallen for unreliable, inadequate and frankly rotten men.
It has always amazed me how one man can dent someone's ego and make such an effervescent character, doubt herself. After a lengthy conversation, evaluating all her past relationships she sighed, looked me dead in the face and said "I give up. I'm giving up on love."
Now, anyone who knows me well enough will know that I'm a romantic. Even though I too have been through hell and back with love, I have never given up. There have been times when I've felt inadequate, when I have doubted myself, who I am, what I am, what I do, my abilities and my lifestyle but I would never close myself off entirely to the prospect of falling in love.

I agree that you should never rely on someone else for happiness, or too complete you, even Diane von Furstenberg said "The most important relationship you will ever have is with yourself, because no matter what happens, you will be with yourself forever". But falling in love can be fabulous. But a word of caution - the person you fall for, may not be.
There is no instruction manual or survival guide, and it often comes along when you least expect it, but know that when in love we often see pass the flaws and see an imperfect person as a flawless being. Always be self-aware. Accept that you don't choose to fall in love, you can't control it, and you (unfortunately) can't choose who you fall in love with, but the worst thing you can do is ignore it. Keep a good head on your shoulders and don't get swept away.
From every experience, good or bad, there is something to be learned, you may not understand the lesson now but in time you will look back and be thankful for that lesson.
Hindsight is my arch nemesis, "If only I knew then what I know now" has become somewhat of a catchphrase for me, but you have to make mistakes in order to grow and progress. Everyone's been through heart ache. Always remember that you're not the only one. Be romantic, but control your imagination. Be optimistic, but always realistic. Don't dismiss love, but don't go looking for "The One" either, just open up, be brave, be shrewd and never ever give up.

Galliano's Garden

Creative, inspiring, innovative and picturesque, there aren't many adjectives left in the English language that haven't already been drastically overused to describe John Galliano's work.
His latest Paris couture show for Dior took inspiration from the decadent gardens of Christian Dior's childhood home. Models glided down the runway in vivid tulip skirts, pansy dresses and petal-adorned ball gowns. Their head dresses and hair styling is a particular favourite touch of mine - wrapped in a rainbow of cellophane, models resembled sumptuous upside down bouquets, Galliano's gifts to the show's audience.
In a time of ecological uncertainty, the collection elegantly promoted nature's beauty and how in a material world, and an industry that sometimes relies too heavily on the "man-made", we need to be reminded of how stunning the planet's natural creations are. An ironic eco-message? Perhaps. To-die-for-couture? Most certainly.
The collection could have ended up being very "costume". Galliano is famed for his theatricality and his work often does dangerously border on the fine line of costume and couture, but yet again he has successfully managed to remain on the right side of the line... Phew.

The Gospel According To Gaga: Part I

"I'm a hard girl, loving me is like chewing on pearls."

"Some women choose to follow men, and some women choose to follow their dreams. If you're wondering which way to go, remember that your career will never wake up and tell you that it doesn't love you any more."

"I'd sooner die than have my fans see me out of a pair of heels."

"A glamorous life is quite different to a life of luxury. I don’t need luxury. For years, I was practically broke but I was still very vain and glamorous. And I still am."

"I'm from New York. I will kill to get what I need."

"US Weekly putting me on the worst dressed list? I don't care. If Karl Lagerfeld called me an ugly hag, then I'd be upset. Because it's Karl Lagerfeld."

"I'm just trying to change the world, one sequin at a time."

Bal des tĂȘtes.

Just a few pictures from the Fall 2010/11 couture campaign from one of Britain's best and only true couturiers, London-based designer Ziad Ghanem, brilliantly photographed by Lefteris Pr and featuring my good friend, Munroe Bergdorf.

His wondrous and fantastical creations have been seen in breath-taking editorials in ELLE, VOGUE UK, Dazed and Confused and Drama magazine, and on the backs of such beauties as Naomi Campbell and Carmen Kass.

His latest couture campaign is a beautifully synchronised symphony of gothic and fairytale. Combining decadent fabrics with luxurious prints and patterns, married with whimsically glamorous make-up (by Michelle Webb), shoes (by Georgie Bee) and accessories (by Sergei Grinko), Ghanem seems to be constantly on the rise, and consistently delivering stand-out collections. Stay tuned.
