Every season I study countless images of runways, presentations, trade shows and street style shots from all over the world to see what's going on in the world, you might say that even though it has been longer than I care to admit since I graduated, you never really stop being a fashion student. This season, one thing has been inescapable - volume. Usually I get caught up in the types of fabric shown, how they're used and manipulated, but this season the one standout theme is the sheer amount of fabric.
Oversized, super long, voluminous, long line, ill-fitting, baggy, however you may refer to it, in this post-recession era brands are being wholly unapologetic for their decadence. Gone are the minimalist, streamlined, clean lines of season past and here we have enough fabric in one garment to make a head to toe look.

Men are in no way overlooked when it comes to the growing number of well... growing clothes, either albeit to a lesser extent. Off the runway, international peacocks gathered at trade show Pitti Uomo (shot by Phil Oh) and showcased an opulent surplus of fabrics on shirts, shorts, outerwear, but particularly trousers - a call to end the reign of the skinny jean perhaps? (I both hope and think not). On the runway, brands such as Moncler Gamme Bleu, Missoni, Prada and Marni served up a myriad of sometimes boxy, often flowing, oversized looks.
The styling of these looks also seemed very deliberate. Heavy layering, a lavish mix of textures, a bold statement in which a message of wealth and self-aggrandising went unsaid, but not unnoticed.
Aesthetics vary from African safari and rainforest exploration to 70s hippie and 90s psychedelia but one message comes through loud and clear: pump up the volume and don't dare apologise.
Here's a selection of my favourite voluminous looks:
